Here is what a 7-port self-powered USB hub with ganged-port power management looks like. I designed it from scratch with EAGLE, following the reference design provided by the TUSB2077A. Every single device and every single package was developed from scratch as well, which taught me quite a bit about surface-mount technology and PCB manufacturing.

Two instances of this circuitry will need to be crammed into our keypad board, alongside an ATmega328 microcontroller, an ADP5589 keypad decoder, and four AS1113 LED drivers. I’m not sure that everything will fit on a single board, but we should know soon enough when doing the board’s routing.

In the meantime, I’m starting to really like EAGLE. It’s a bit of an acquired taste (like any PCB design tool I guess), but it’s proving remarkably stable, especially when making changes to library components. I’ll stick with it for now…
