In order to reduce development costs for our backplane and lower initial acquisition costs for new users, I have decided to break down our 8-channel backplane into 4 smaller backplanes, each capable of supporting 2 channels. This modular design will also make it easier to develop smaller or larger versions of our submodular synthesizer, with 4 or 16 channels for example.
To support this new design, our new dual-channel backplane will have a set of connectors allowing it to be mounted on the faceplate PCB. One 32-pin connector will be used for the 32 ports of the crosspoint bus, while another 32-pin connector will be used to connect the two sets of 16 jack chassis sockets on the faceplate to the 16 analog ports of each of the backplane’s two channels. A third connector made of 12 pins will be used for the SPI bus, reference level, 12V power supply, 5V power supply, ground, 2 GPIO ports, and two unallocated pins.
